JHTV Translational Funding Application

  • Application Opens: March 23, 2026
  • Deadline: April 14, 2026

Funding Structure
Award amounts are flexible and will be determined based on project needs, with awards typically capped at $50,000.

Evaluation Criteria
Proposals will be assessed based on innovation, scientific merit, prospective market impact, technical feasibility, and commercialization potential.

Strategic Approach
Faculty should view this funding opportunity as a sustained resource designed to support ongoing technology development, rather than a single, all-or-nothing opportunity. The most competitive applications will demonstrate significant impact while using capital efficiently. We encourage you to identify the essential data needed to reach your next key milestone and to adopt a phased development plan as you will have recurring opportunities to apply for funding at different stages of your project.

Review Process
All applications will be evaluated by a committee of relevant industry experts.

Eligibility

To be considered, your application must meet the following criteria:

  1. Your technology must be formally disclosed to the Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures office and assigned a case number (e.g. C12345) Report an invention here: ventures.jhu.edu/roi.
  2. The invention must not be subject to any pre-existing exclusive licenses, non-exclusive licenses, or options.
  3. At least one investigator must have a full, joint, or courtesy faculty appointment at Johns Hopkins University.
  4. Only one application per Lead Principal Investigator per application cycle.

Please note: The Louis B. Thalheimer Fund for Translational Research and Zizic Translational Fund are evergreen funds. When Thalheimer/Zizic-funded technologies are successfully licensed, a portion of the Johns Hopkins’ license revenue (twice the award amount) is repaid to the Thalheimer/Zizic Fund to support future projects. Therefore, if a technology receives a $100,000 award, $200,000 is repaid to the Thalheimer/Zizic Fund before any revenues are distributed to Johns Hopkins, including inventors.
