Our researchers are at the forefront of groundbreaking innovation and transformative discoveries in a variety of fields. This selection of faculty and student innovators and entrepreneurs exemplifies this work, offering a taste of the robust and growing Johns Hopkins innovation pipeline.

10 Innovations in 10 Years

Each month, we will highlight a successful Johns Hopkins technology or startup developed within the last decade. Explore each innovation or startup to delve deeper into their success stories.

Pylarify: A PET imaging agent that precisely detects PSMA-positive cancers and guides treatment decisions, with value to patients with suspected prostate cancer metastasis or recurrence. Brought to market by Lantheus, Pylarify secured FDA approval in May 2021 and has rapidly gained adoption, with 2023 sales volume of $851 million.

DELFI Building on breakthroughs at Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, this biotech startup develops liquid biopsy tests using AI and DNA fragmentomics to detect cancer early. Their affordable blood test aims to improve early lung cancer detection and reduce mortality rates.

Opdualag™ (nivolumab and relatlimab) is a first-in-class, fixed-dose dual immunotherapy combination. The FDA approved treatment combines two different immune checkpoints, LAG-3 and PD-1, and represents a significant leap forward in improving anti-tumor response.

Thrive Earlier Detection was formed to bring earlier multi-cancer detection into routine medical care via liquid biopsy. Its pioneering screening technology, including the pivotal CancerSEEK, got the attention of Exact Sciences Corporation, which acquired Thrive in 2020 for $2.15 billion, the largest acquisition in Johns Hopkins’ startup history.

For over a decade, Personal Genome Diagnostics has been developing liquid biopsy and tissue-based genomic products out of its Baltimore offices. Following a major acquisition by LabCorp in 2022, its next-generation sequencing is now incorporated into LabCorp’s oncology diagnostics portfolio and driving better patient outcomes.

In 2024, the FDA approved Voranigo, a targeted cancer therapy that inhibits the mutated IDH gene, slowing the growth of low-grade glioma. This gene was discovered in 2008 by researchers from Johns Hopkins and Duke University, paving the way for this treatment.
